The company produces wheat and barley as its primary crops. There are two distinct cropping seasons per year, with harvesting and planting occurring at the same time. No land is planted to cereals both seasons, and a range of rotation crops are used, primarily peas, oil seed rape and potatoes.
Kisima has invested in arable equipment that places the farm at the forefront of Kenyan arable production. Recent priorities have been the adoption of satellite guidance systems for precision agriculture and controlled traffic, and the development of no tillage and controlled traffic systems (conservation agriculture) for optimal soil moisture conservation (direct drilling techniques).
Arable operations are supported by 3,000 tonnes of grain storage capacity, and two 30 tonne per hour capacity driers.
Kisima started flower production in 2001 with 2.3 ha of roses under plastic and lilies grown under shade.
This has since expanded to 18 ha of roses in green houses, and outdoor production is now focused on 4 ha of Delphinium and Limonium.
Floriculture production is supported by a packhouse, cold storage, and transport.
Kisima maintains over 650 ha of forest estate, largely Pinus Radiata, Pinus patula, and Eucalyptus.
Kisima operates two band sawmills and mills over 450,000 running feet of timber per year.
Kisima has recently become Kenya’s leading producer of certified seed potatoes, producing over 200,000 minitubers per year in an aeroponics screen house, and over 2,000 tonnes of certified seed potatoes per year from 130 ha using 3G strategy. This strategy enables the rapid scale up of production, getting seed to farmers in 18 months rather than the normal 3 years. Certified 3G seed typically increases smallholder yields by 3-5 times (from 8t/ha to 40t/ha)
Potatoes are the second most important food crop in Kenya, grown by 800,000 smallholders, on 158,000 hectares, requiring 300,000 tonnes of seed per year. National certified seed production is currently less than 5% of demand. Kisima meets 75% of that certified seed production, and supplies over 2,500 smallholders per year.
We have on site cold storage of 1000 ton capacity.
